Older than the Earth
The true story of the little block of iron in the glass box.
It looks like a lump of metal.
It is 39 grammes of another world.

First, look closely at what’s actually in the box
Pick it up and the first surprise is the weight: far heavier than a stone that size has any right to be. That’s because it isn’t stone at all. It’s solid metal, through and through. Those little thumbprint dents in its surface even have a name: regmaglypts, hollows the fall melted into it, the way your thumb dents soft clay.

Four and a half billion years ago, there was no Earth.
Just a newborn star, wrapped in dust.
The dust gathered into small young worlds.
In one of them, this metal sank to the core.
The proof
How do we know it’s a planet’s core?
Fair question. It’s a big claim for a small lump. The answer is hiding inside the metal. Cut an iron meteorite open, polish it, brush it with acid, and a pattern appears: interlocking criss-cross bands of iron and nickel crystal, called the Widmanstätten pattern. And that pattern only grows in metal that cools impossibly slowly.

Cooling speed: red-hot to cold in a day
Cooled in a day: a blacksmith’s pace. The metal freezes before any pattern can grow. Every piece of human-made iron on Earth looks like this inside: nothing.
Then a collision smashed that little world apart.
For most of the next four billion years, its iron heart stayed shielded, packed inside the rubble of a larger body…
…until, in just the last few hundred million years, it broke free and drifted bare through the dark.
Until one night, the Earth got in the way.

Same stardust
You and it are relatives
Earth doesn’t make iron. Not really. A dying star fused every atom of it, everywhere, and scattered it when the star blew apart. People have melted down and reshaped the iron in gates and pans a hundred times over. The iron in this box came straight from the source: star-metal, planet-forged, untouched. Delivered by fire. And it landed in your life the same week human beings flew around the Moon for the first time in over half a century.

Next time someone picks it up and says “cool rock”, stop them right there. It isn’t a rock. It’s the core of a planet that died before the Earth was born. It fell in a rain of fire while the pyramids were still new, and nobody can make the crystal pattern inside it, anywhere, at any price: it only grows, a degree per million years, under the rock of a whole world.
