Most numbers stop at a hundred. Time stops at sixty. Nearly every mistake with time starts there.

The puzzle
Sixty marks, then the hour clicks on
Long before clocks had hands, people told the time by a shadow. Push a stick into the ground (its old name is a gnomon) and as the sun crosses the sky its shadow sweeps round a dial. To read the dial closely, they cut it into sixty marks. Not a hundred. Sixty. Every clock since has kept the habit.

This is where it goes wrong.
Half a metre is fifty. Half an hour is thirty.
The trap
Same word, two different numbers
A metre is 100 cm, so half a metre is 50. That makes half an hour sound like 50 minutes. It isn’t. An hour is 60, so half of it is 30. Same word, “half”, two answers, because a metre and an hour count to different totals.
Before you tap: will a third of an hour land on a whole number of minutes? Will a third of a metre land on a whole centimetre? Guess, then pick a slice and watch.
Same fraction, two answers: 50 and 30. That gap is the trap.
So why sixty, and not a round hundred?
Because sixty shares out better.

Sixty shares out. A hundred doesn’t.
Sixty splits into whole minutes far more ways than 100 does: halves, thirds, quarters, fifths, sixths. The people who cut the first dials chose 60 on purpose, so anyone could share an hour without messy fractions. Before you tap: guess which splits break the pretend 100-minute hour.

When you add time, or take it away, one thing only changes: where you carry. Not at 100, at 60. Set a time, add or take minutes, and watch the wrong answer sit crossed out beside the right one.
