One pattern, billions of times

A diamond and the lead in your pencil are the same atom. The difference is how it’s stacked.

The setup

Start with one unit

Table salt is the friendliest crystal to start with. Its whole pattern is just one sodium and one chlorine, tucked into a little checker. That pair is the unit: the stamp. On its own it isn’t a crystal yet. It becomes one the moment you copy it.

The trap

Why is a grain of salt a cube?

Tip some table salt onto a dark plate and look closely: nearly every grain is a tiny cube. Somebody had to make them that shape… didn’t they? Answer before you peek. No changing your mind after.

Grains of table salt are cube-shaped because…

Nothing with a knife ever visits your salt. The cube comes from the inside: sodium and chlorine lock into a repeating cube pattern, and when trillions of them stack up, the whole grain comes out as a cube. Same as a brick wall: lay identical bricks in a tidy repeating pattern and the wall’s face turns out flat and square, without anyone smoothing it.

Every snowflake that has ever fallen is different.

Every one has exactly six arms.

The why

Why every snowflake has six arms

Not five, not seven. Always six. That isn’t luck either: water molecules lock together in a six-sided pattern, so whatever happens on one arm has to happen on all six. Draw into one slice below and watch the crystal copy you into the other five.

A water molecule is bent, like a wide V. That little kink is what makes them link into six-sided rings when they freeze, and six-sided rings build six-armed flakes. The bent V is the tiny unit; the flake is it, repeated.

The why, again

The flat faces are just the stacking

So where do a crystal’s smooth faces and sharp corners come from, if nobody polishes them? They’re where the neat rows of atoms run out. Stack marbles tidily and the pile ends on straight, slanted lines all by itself. Pick a crystal, then reveal the faces and see them sitting right on top of the last row of atoms.

Add more atoms and the ragged edge tightens onto a straight line. The face was never carved. It’s just where a flat wall of atoms stops. Sharp corner? That’s two walls meeting.

A diamond and the lead in your pencil…

…are the exact same atom. Carbon. Nothing else.

The only difference is how it’s stacked.

The punchline

Same atom. Two completely different things.

That difference is the gap between the hardest natural material on Earth and something soft enough to smear onto paper. Flip between them, then try to slide the top layer.

Diamond: every carbon grips four others in a rigid 3-D cage. Nothing can shift, so it’s the hardest natural material there is. Graphite: carbon in flat sheets that slide over each other, so bits shear off onto your page every time you write. Same atom. Different arrangement. Arrangement is everything.

Salt. Sugar. Snow. Diamond. Ice on the window.

Every one is a pattern, repeated past counting.

None of it was carved. It just showed through.

One more thing

Once you know the trick, crystals are everywhere. The salt and sugar on the table are both stacks of repeating units. So is a diamond and every other gem. So is the snow outside and the feathery ice that grows across a cold window: each fern is water molecules queuing up in the same six-sided pattern, over and over. None of it is carved. It’s all one tiny arrangement, copied billions of times, showing through at a size you can finally see.

So next time someone calls a crystal “grown”, or thinks a snowflake’s six arms are luck, hand them a grain of salt. It’s a cube because the pattern inside is a cube. If you can take them from the one little unit up to the whole shape, this one is yours for good.
