Today's Lesson: The Round-Off

First get your cartwheel good

  1. Only try this once your cartwheel is strong and straight — a round-off is really a fast cartwheel that snaps your feet together at the end.
  2. Warm up properly and use a soft floor with lots of space in front of you.

Set it up

  1. Arms up by your ears, strong leg steps forward into a lunge, just like a cartwheel.
  2. This time you go a bit faster — a little skip (a "hurdle") into it gives you the speed.

The round-off

  1. Hands down one after the other on your line, legs kicking up over the top.
  2. Here's the difference from a cartwheel: at the top, snap your legs together so they meet in the air.
  3. Push hard through your hands and turn, so you land on BOTH feet at the same time — now facing back the way you came.
  4. Land with your arms up and a little bounce, tall and ready.

Get it smooth

  1. Do it slowly first, then add speed bit by bit. Never rush to the fast version before the slow one feels completely safe.

Coach's tip: the snap of your legs together at the top is where all the power comes from. Bring a coach or a grown-up in for this one until it's solid. 💜

Recipe 3: Fluffy Pancakes

Before you start

  1. Wash your hands.
  2. Get everything out: 1 mug of self-raising flour, 1 mug of milk, 1 egg, a spoon of sugar, and a little butter for the pan. A whisk and a ladle too.

Make the batter

  1. Flour and sugar into a bowl, then crack the egg into the middle.
  2. Pour in about half the milk and whisk it into a thick paste with no lumps, then whisk in the rest until it's smooth and pours off the whisk like thick cream.
  3. Let it sit for a few minutes while the pan heats — a little rest makes them fluffier.

Cook them

  1. Low to medium heat, and a tiny bit of butter rubbed round the pan. Too hot and they burn before they cook in the middle.
  2. Ladle in a puddle of batter and don't touch it — wait until you see little bubbles pop all over the top.
  3. Now flip it (ask a grown-up the first couple of times) and give it another minute until it's golden underneath.
  4. Keep them warm on a plate while you cook the rest.

The best bit

  1. Stack them up and pile on whatever you love: berries, banana, a drizzle of honey or maple syrup, or a little chocolate spread.

Chef's tip: wait for the bubbles before you flip. When little bubbles pop all over the top, that's the pancake telling you it's ready. Flip too soon and it tears. 🥞

Man Juggles Flaming Torches, Loses His Eyebrows

An Idaho man decided to juggle flaming torches while riding a unicycle, and it went about as well as you would expect. The stunt singed off both his eyebrows in one go. He escaped unharmed otherwise, but we reckon his eyebrows need a serious head start growing back.
