Lewis Capaldi Dazzles Through The Rain At Electric Picnic

Lewis Capaldi turned soggy skies into a party at Electric Picnic in Stradbally, closing out Day One with a set stuffed full of his biggest hits. Heavy overnight rain left the site properly damp and there were delays getting going, but none of that stopped fans from having the time of their lives. Reviewers called it a brilliant finale, with Capaldi belting out one anthem after another alongside fellow headliner Zara Larsson, according to Hotpress and the Irish Examiner. BreakingNews.ie reported that the rain genuinely failed to dampen spirits, with the crowd singing every word right back at him. It just goes to show that a bit of Irish weather is no match for a proper singalong. If you're heading to a festival this summer, take a brolly, you never know who might be closing the night.

Olivia Rodrigo's Women-Led Festival Wows In The Heat

Olivia Rodrigo's first ever festival, Daisy Chain Fields, brought together an entirely female lineup for one huge day out, and by all accounts it did not disappoint. The Guardian called the whole thing electric, even though fans had to battle through seriously extreme heat to enjoy it. Rolling Stone was there snapping the best moments, capturing fans dancing, singing and soaking up the atmosphere all day long. It's Olivia's first go at running her own festival, and reviewers reckon she nailed it, proving she's just as brilliant behind the scenes as she is on stage. Expect Daisy Chain Fields to become a proper yearly tradition if this year's reaction is anything to go by, so watch this space for details on round two.

Hit TV Show Throws Open Doors To Taylor And Sabrina

The cast of hit show Adults have gone and thrown open their doors, telling the world that Taylor Swift and Sabrina Carpenter are more than welcome to pop by any time. It's the kind of shoutout that sends fans straight into meltdown mode, with everyone now dreaming up what an episode featuring two of pop's biggest stars might actually look like. Getting a nod from two artists this famous is a proper compliment for any show, invite or not. Whether Taylor or Sabrina actually take them up on the offer is still anyone's guess. Either way, it's a fun reminder of just how huge both stars have become, when even TV shows are queuing up to have them over. Fingers crossed one of them says yes.

Today's Lesson: The Handstand

real Poppie words

Start at the wall

  1. Do it near a wall first.
  2. Arms up in the air, by your ears.
  3. One leg in front of you, into a lunge.
  4. Go forward: as your arms come down, your straight leg lifts behind you. You should end up in a T (or a Wonder Woman!).
  5. Keep going down: hands on the ground, and your other leg kicks up until it hits the wall.

Holding it longer

  1. Spread your hands out and kind of dig them into the ground, and you'll hold your handstand longer.
  2. Always point your toes.

Then try without the wall

  1. Same thing on the open floor: hands up by your ears, lunge, down into the T, hands on the ground, kick up. Keep practising until it's straight and controlled.

Get stronger with a helper

  1. Flat-back drill: lie on the ground and push your back into the floor so there are no gaps. A family member or friend tries to slide their hand under your back. If it can't get through, you're doing it right.
  2. Tight-body drill: lie down as if you're in a handstand and stay really tight. Your helper lifts your legs. If you come up in one straight diagonal line, that's right. If your bum stays on the floor… that's wrong!

Coach's tip: always practise on something soft, and warm up first! πŸ’œ

Recipe 2: Spaghetti Carbonara

real Poppie words

Before you start

  1. Wash your hands.
  2. Get everything out: spaghetti, bacon, 2 eggs, a big handful of grated pecorino romano (or a mix of 1/3 parmigiano and 2/3 pecorino), and the pepper grinder.

The pasta

  1. Big pot of water on to boil with a good pinch of salt.
  2. When it's properly bubbling, spaghetti in. Set a timer for what the packet says, usually about 10 minutes.

The bacon

  1. While the pasta cooks, snip the bacon into little pieces with scissors (way easier than a knife).
  2. Into a big pan on medium heat until it's golden and a little bit crispy. If you like mushrooms, slice a few in with the bacon. They make it even better.

The sauce

  1. Crack the 2 eggs into a bowl, add the cheese and loads of black pepper, and mix it up with a fork. That's the sauce: no cream in a real carbonara, ever.
  2. Just before the pasta is done, scoop out half a mug of the cooking water and keep it. You'll want it in a minute.

Put it together

  1. Drain the spaghetti and tip it into the bacon pan. Now take the pan OFF the heat.
  2. Pour in the egg mix and keep everything moving: the heat of the pasta cooks the sauce until it goes silky.
  3. Too thick? Add a splash of that pasta water you saved.
  4. Into a big bowl, extra cheese on top, done.

Chef's tip: the pan comes OFF the heat before the eggs go in. That's the whole secret. Eggs in a hot pan turn into scrambled eggs, and scrambled eggs are for breakfast. 🍝
